She tried to respond, to tell him that she wasn't here for a book, but looking for a lost item. She only managed to whisper so softly, "...No..." She shook her head, so her long pink mane would hide her face, to hide her face, which turned beet-red. Thankfully, Twilight stepped in and though she wished the stranger wasn't here, having a friend made it less...stressful.
"Oh...ummm...,' she said so soft, even she could barely hear it. "Well...I lost Angel's treat and-" Her voice gave out on her and if it was possible for her to be even more embarrassed, that's what would've happened. She coughed, trying to get the nerve to talk again. "A-and I thought that...I might have left it here..."

Just from hearing her name, the stallion recognized the mare in a split second. "Fluttershy, eh?" he inquired, quite interested in the filly just entered. He wasn't in the presence of one pony involved with saving all of Equestria from the changelings, but two. He gave the mare a smile, noticing right away that she was nervous with him being around. By now, the book had been shut and swiftly tucked under the stallion's arm. "Might as well get dis over wit'," he decided. Richter took a few steps toward Fluttershy and extended a hoof, totally unsure if she'd take it or not. "Da name's Richter, soldier of da Royal Guard. It's an honor meetin' ya." He realized he hadn't properly introduced himself to Twilight either, as they had gotten so caught up in finding that book that he didn't have time to give his name. Oh well, it was out in the air now.

Obviously, the guard didn't know much about Fluttershy. Otherwise, he wouldn't have expected his direct (albeit friendly) approach to draw more than panicked silence from the softer-spoken pegasus. Twilight sighed; she and the rest of their friends had tried to get Fluttershy out of her shell. But even after that disastrous stint of 'New Fluttershy,' it seemed the yellow pony would never really become confident around strangers.
"Oh...ummm...,' she said so soft, even she could barely hear it. "Well...I lost Angel's treat and-a-and I thought that...I might have left it here..."
"Oh, is that it?" Twilight said, relief in her tone. "Well, I'd be glad to help you look for it, I seem to be be doing that a lot today." She made the last remark in a somewhat rueful tone, as though it had been more of a trouble than it was. Truthfully, though, she'd enjoyed assisting the guard in his own search; the Ponyville library was fairly underused, and even when other ponies stopped by, Twilight was miffed to find that books weren't often their reason for coming.
Thank Celestia she was here to make proper use of the library.
"Fluttershy, eh? Da name's Richter, soldier of da Royal Guard. It's an honor meetin' ya."
Twilight arched her eyebrows at Richter. She'd never seen any guard pony introduce themselves so casually; in fact, had it not been for her correspondence with Shining Armor, she might not have even known any of their names. (Or that they had names, for that matter.) Knowing that Fluttershy would probably have a great deal of difficulty managing a response, the purple unicorn stepped in for her friend. "Well, it's nice to really meet you, Mr. Richter," she said, offering him the smile she also knew Fluttershy might not make. "You should know, my brother thinks very highly of you." He hadn't mentioned Richter specifically; he rarely singled out any of the ponies he captained for. But he was proud of all of them, so it wasn't really lying, was it?

Fluttershy wished the stranger would stop talking or, better yet, leave her to find what she had came here for. But it seemed nothing was going to work in her favor today. The pony introduced himself and continued to talk. Did he think he was making the situation better? Or was he not one for awkward silences? She was fine with any kind of silence. She was still the stabbing winner of the silent game.
She tried to reply. She really did, but all that came out were soft, long vowels. Thankfully, Twilight stepped in, relieving the pressure of going around her shy personality. Yes, when she learned to be more assertive with the help of the minotaur, but it really only effected how direct she could be and convey her thoughts outloud to ponies she had met before, even once. But Richter wasn't someone she knew. He was new. And he talked funny.
Taking an advantage of Twilight's help, Fluttershy tried to softly walk around them to find the treats. Now, where could she have left them? What if Spike had cleaned the place or even ate them, himself!? Angel would be so disappointed. But even if Twilight had covered for her, she still needed the mare's help, so she stood near the bookcases, waiting, her eyes fixed on the ground.

The stallion said nothing as Twilight took Fluttershy's place in shaking his hoof. He acted cool, trying not to make things more uncomfortable for either of them. Richter returned the smile with his own at the mention of Shining Armor's name. "Ahh, a'course he does," he said. "Da boy's got spunk, 'das fo' sure." Richter paused for a moment, allowing his hoof to return to the ground. Giving another glance around at the library, he added, "Not as much spunk as you gals, dough. Takin' down all dem changlin's? Ya sure got guts." Richter's grin had grown larger, but a quick glance at Twilight and Fluttershy made it fade just a bit. He had practically forgotten he wasn't hear to socialize. Boy, he must've looked so unprofessional. The stallion quickly straightened himself back up, making his hooves perfectly parallel to one another and raising his head proudly. He cleared his throat to cope with the somewhat awkward silence that seemed to follow.
The stallion turned himself a bit away from the two, focusing on a nearby book shelf. His opinion on books hadn't changed in the past few minutes (if anything, he hated them even more now since it seemed so difficult to find the one he needed), yet he figured he could waste a bit more time. Besides, the stallion had the urge to hang around just a bit longer, partly because he wanted to see what kind of ponies these heroes really were. Plus, he wasn't looking forward to his return to Canterlot. If anyone even saw him with a book...well, there goes his reputation. "Eey, don't mind me," he said at last. "You two just go back to what you's was doin'. I'mma look 'round at de other books you gots here..." He shot a quick glance to Twilight. "...if das alright wit ya, Twilight?"

"Ahh, a'course he does. Da boy's got spunk, 'das fo' sure."
Twilight raised a brow at Richter's simple acknowledgment of praise. Most ponies she knew would have responded by dismissing the comment as excessively kind, or simply said 'thanks.' Other than Rainbow Dash, Twilight couldn't think of anypony who would say 'of course.' Perhaps the stallion figured shooting a compliment right back at her (or at her brother) would serve just as well. And it might have done a bit better as a substitute, had it not set the unicorn on a second train of thought: wondering why somepony would refer to their boss as 'da boy.'
Perhaps she was just over-thinking things.
"Not as much spunk as you gals, dough. Takin' down all dem changlin's? Ya sure got guts."
Smiling a bit bashfully, Twilight scuffed a hoof on the wooden library floor. "Thanks," she said. "But I'd be a little more proud if it had actually accomplished anything." Perhaps she and her friends had been kicking flank and taking names, but in the end, it had essentially been for naught; they'd never reached the Elements of Harmony. So, the practically-minded pony figured that for all their effort, they hadn't really gotten much done, and that was that.
Not wishing to waste time explaining this reasoning to somepony who would probably just brush it aside, Twilight turned her attention back to Fluttershy, who'd begun searching for her wayward...whatever it was. "What exactly was this treat you left, Fluttershy?" she asked her friend, glancing about the library to aid in the search. With any luck, they could find the treat before it started attracting ants; the last thing Twilight needed was a swarm of hungry insects to keep her from her studies even longer.
"Eey, don't mind me. You two just go back to what you's was doin'. I'mma look 'round at de other books you gots here...if das alright wit ya, Twilight?"
Twilight stopped.
She turned to stare at Richter, shock on her face.
Then the shock melted into a look of pure and utter glee.
"Of course you can!" she said, joy clear in both her voice and expression. This was incredible! Not only had she gotten somepony in who was looking for a book--he'd become interested in reading! It was like an early birthday present for Twilight. "Any book here is available to the public, browse away," she chimed, before turning back to help Fluttershy. For once, the unicorn no longer really cared that her essay writing had been interrupted.

Fluttershy searched as far as she could, although her movements were stiff, trying not to make a single sound. She didn't even dare to use her wings to move around more swiftly. Thankfully, Twilight really managed to pull the other pony into another conversation, so Fluttershy began to search a bit more vigorously. Surely, the treats wouldn't have gone too far.
The word "changlings" caught her attention and much like her friend, she blushed. Twilight was right. They really hadn't done much. The only credit they should really get was persistence, right? At least they had tried to get to the elements of harmony once more. The memory of the masses of Raritys, Pinkie Pies, Twilights, Applejacks, Rainbow Dash and herself was an oddly scary, though somewhat entertaining thought.
When Twilight came over to her, bringing her back to reality -compared to her changling thoughts- she smiled. "Oh, they're just these apple-like treats. Its a dry snack," she explained, almost forgetting the other pony in the room. "I've checked every other place since I picked them up, earlier. This is the last place," Fluttershy said.
"I don't believe I went upstairs, so...if it's here, it should be on this floor?"

Richter's eyes widened a bit at Twilight's reaction, though he made sure that he didn't appear too surprised since he didn't want her to think he thought she was crazy. Richter supposed he did, at least a little bit, though it was simply because of how much she loved books. Again, he thought of how he lived his entire life not reading one book (he assumed newspapers didn't exactly count; he was taught not to read it anyway since that was precious time he could use to sell it instead). Attempting to keep a straight face, he allowed himself to examine some of the book shelves.
He figured it'd be best to make it look like he was genuinely interested in looking for books, hoping that Twilight and Fluttershy would get lost enough in their conversation that they wouldn't notice him listening in. His eyes found the nearest book on the shelf. Placing the book he had in his hooves on the ground before him, Richter slipped "Rare Creatures of Equestria" from the shelf and opened to a random page. He gave a quick glance over the boring paragraph, relying on the image beside the wall of text to tell him what the words were telling him. The image of the phoenix was sketch-like, and a caption below the picture read, "A newly regenerated phoenix." Richter gave a quiet grunt, somewhat offended by the book's information. "I could'a told ya dat," he thought, remembering the various times he'd seen Princess Celestia's own Phoenix grow old and renew herself.
Twitching his ears, he glanced over to Twilight and Fluttershy, checking up on what they were up to. It was somewhat obvious, at least to him, that the book was boring him already. Hopefully the two fillies behind him could spice things up a bit.

Twilight nodded in agreement. "A logical conclusion," she mused, ending her (evidently pointless) glancing about the room to think harder about this conundrum. Just where could the snack have gone? It wasn't like Fluttershy had spent a great deal of time in the library the last time she was there. She'd come in, they'd chatted for a short while, the pegasus had mentioned what she needed to research, Twilight plied her with a few books, and Fluttershy had left. They hadn't even left this part of the library; but how could the yellow mare have placed the snack somewhere that it wasn't immediately visible?
"Well...let's see," Twilight murmured to nopony in particular, trotting over to a set of shelves near the stairs. "The animal care section is over here, and..." Narrowing her eyes, the unicorn scanned the room before pointing a hoof at a spot near the table. "And you were standing there when I gave you the books, right? So if you were carrying anything, maybe you put it down around there." Twilight nodded solemnly, clearly quite convinced that she was right.
After all, she had logic on her side.

Fluttershy nodded to what Twilight said. Right, she had been in the animal care section. Quickly, she went to the area Twilight suggested. Maybe she had put the snacks down to put the books in her satchel? First, she looked at the top of the table. If she didn't look there first, and they were there, that would be horribly embarrassing. She lowered her head to look at the ground. Right there, by one of the pegs of the table, was a small bag that contained the treat.
"Right here!" she squealed, picking them up, only to hit her head on the table on the way up. "Ouch..." she wined, backing up to stand up. But she didn't want to worry her friend. She was fine! Just a small bump! She let out a small laugh to brush it off. "Um...It's fine."
"Thank you Twilight," she said to Twilight, smiling, and her wings out. "Angel will love these!"

He gave a smile from his little corner when Fluttershy found what she was looking for; he always felt good seeing other ponies happy. It was another part of why he appreciated his job so much. The satisfaction of seeing relief on the faces of other ponies was so satisfying, and this time was no different. He usually felt better if he made the pony happy, but either way it put him in a good mood. He slipped the book he was browsing through back on the shelf, no longer bothered by the fact that it hadn't taught him anything at all. Turning his head toward the two, he was about to speak up until he checked the clock on the wall. Remembering that he was on duty, he figured he better get the book back to the colonel before he decided to have Richter's head. Making sure he had the book he needed back in his grasp, he gave his farewell to the ponies before him. "I should get goin', Twilight," he started off. "Tanks for helpin' wit' da book. I'll get it back ta ya as soon as I can."
Heading toward the door he gave each of them a nod, attempting to be a bit more formal for his departure. "Nice meetin' ya Fluttershy. See ya both 'round!" Giving a formal salute, he casually headed for the door.
ooc; blagh this is poop. I don't know where else to go with this thread xD
