It was practically instinct that drew her to this town.
She was well aware of the fact that Ponyville wasn't as rich as some of the other areas in Equestria, and that would certainly be a problem considering some of the valuable items that were currently in her possession. Considering the fact that the mare was pretty well known in Manehattan by now (and most certainly not for a good reason), she figured Ponyville would be a somewhat significant investment. Oh yes, the big town was just full of ponies she could scam. It was likely that a scheme would be difficult to carry out on a small scale, so Marian was already thinking of bigger and better things. She smiled as she walked, getting her fill of the lives being led in this town. The ponies were so happy and active. So easy to trick. Occasionally she grinned at a stranger, already beginning to improve her image here. As the mare moved along, she kept her eye out for a less populated area, one where she could pause for a brief moment and go over things within her mind. Ponyville was pretty active, however, and this task proved to be a bit difficult. Turning down a nearby path, the mare quickly found herself heading into a neat little forest with trees that seemed to reach for the heavens. She gave a sly grin, figuring the area wouldn't be crowded like the inner town.
The mare trotted along, focusing in on the sound of the valuable pendant jingling within her saddlebag. "Circular frame made of pure silver. Sapphire heart in the middle. Once belonged to a previous Captain of the Royal Guard. Carved from Princess Luna's magic," she thought, reciting the generic description of the valuable item. The fact that a Princess had touched it was what made the object most valuable, thus making it most cherished by Marian. "Highest bid: 10,000 bits." Oh no, it certainly wasn't enough for Marian's liking, nor the stallion selling the object. If Marian was expecting 30% of the earnings, she would certainly need more than that. She could tell that the pendant wouldn't be selling in a place like this. "More likely to be stolen," she thought. "Best be keeping our eyes on the saddle bag then, hmm?" A fairly simple task; she rarely let the thing out of her sight, for its' contents were too precious.
Once the mare was far enough down the trail she had been following, she came to a quick halt and turned to her saddlebag. She felt around for the special pendant and pulled it out, dangling it by the chain before her eyes. The circular pendant with the heart in the middle twirled in the air, allowing her eyes to fully examine the object as she has done many times before. "What would I do if I lost you?" she murmured softly. "He'd have my head, that's what." Luckily Marian was much more careful than that. She'd had a couple of replicas made as well, and they could each be found in the opposite pouch of the saddle bag. It was easy for someone like her to tell the difference between the items, but for an average pony, it was quite difficult. Perhaps for now she could give ponies a deal on a "special" item.
A sound down the trail startled her, causing a quick and speedy reaction. Quickly pulling the saddle bag from her back, she reached inside for one of the tiny pouches within, slowly inserting the expensive pendant and pulling the strings so that it shut. Technically she should have kept it in there the entire time, but Marian liked to have easy access to her items in case of a sale opportunity; Ponyville residents, however, wouldn't be outbidding the pony currently hoping to get their hooves on the gem. She gently dropped the pouch back in the bag and set the bag back over her back. Turning her head to where the noise was coming from, she could see a stranger approaching in the distance. "Earth pony, mare. Red mane, white body." A fairly simple identification. She put her smile on and decided to approach the stranger. Marian pushed herself into a steady trot, calling out to her. "Hello there!" She could see the mare's ears perking up. But of course she had heard her. "How are you doing on this fabulous day?" As Marian inched closer to the mare, she couldn't help but feel like a spider luring a fly into her little trap.

Of course, Ponyville's current (and self-proclaimed 'world famous') salesponies were just beginning their day. This was obvious to EVERYPONY in the area, as loud series of mechanical sounds pierced the air, commanding everypony's attention.
BOOMCHUGGAWHIIIRCHUGGABOOMCHUGGAWHIRRCHUGGABOOMCHUGGAWHIRRR!
Down the road came the two straw hat and vest-clad unicorn brothers, standing proudly atop their latest invention. Once the sheer noise of the machine drew to a full stop, the noise continued at a much more gentle volume.
"Mares and Stallions of every age" They began at a singsong pace. "the Flim Flam brothers are here to share" "Something both amazing and strange" "Why, for just a few bits, you won't believe your eyes" "This mysterious little bottle and the power it holds inside" "We're talkin' 'bout Apple Skin Oil, Mares and Colts" "To fillies young and old" "The magical mixture that can do 'most anything!" "Brush it in your mane to impress a mare" "It'll put quite a shine in your hair" "Take a swing if you're going to sing" "Use it to ease the pain of a sting" "Feeling like you just aren't up to snuff?" "Take a dose of this wonderful stuff" "We're talkin' 'bout Apple Skin Oil, Mares and Colts" "To fillies young and old" "the magical mixture that can do 'most anythiiiing!"
Their little chant had turned into quite the catchy tune, and the brothers were dancing around their machine like it was a stage. Their horns were aglow with magic while the machine started to pump out bottle after bottle, trying to draw a bigger crowd than this meager few ponies that had their attention grabbed by the loud machine. Before long this "somewhat secluded area" would be abuzz with activity if the brothers had their way.

What was that horrible noise? Marian wasn't the only one to hear it, as the redheaded mare turned her head toward the sound as well. The excitement on her face turned to confusion with a hint of excitement, almost mimicking the facial expression of the pony at her side. Marian watched as the contraption approached herself and the mare, noticing that it was being controlled by magic. And the source? "Two tall unicorns, one mustached. Yellow, with red and white manes. Bowties...quite classy. Hats too, and suits." Marian simply scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Too obvious. What a flaw." She saw right through the two salesponies' scheme, quickly realizing that she could lose her potential buyer extremely fast. Marian had to make a quick decision, but fortunately, she was an expert with handling situations such as this.
She hadn't expected their technique to be so...childish. Once the obnoxious sound of their machine died down, what most would call a "catchy tune" substituted the machine's noise. The technique was intriguing to say the least, though she was unsure of its efficiency. Knowing how gullible ponies can be, it's entirely possible that the method could work. Despite this, she wouldn't be losing her client to these foolish boys. This mare was hers. Marian gave a quick glance to the mare at her side before taking a step forward, daring to get just a bit closer to the brothers. This situation would be handled with much care. "Pardon me," she began, her voice escalating. "But as a former resident of the glorious Canterlot, I cannot help but point out the mistake these gentlemen are making." She turned herself back around, kicking up a bit of dirt and aiming it at the two now behind her. Facing the mare directly, she continued. "Beauty products; they're a waste of bits! They enhance your appearance temporarily, and once you run out, you're forced to purchase even more. That's more money in their pockets!" Marian looked straight Ito the mare's eyes and smiled sweetly. Reaching into her saddle bag, she grasped one of the decoy necklaces by the chain and pulled it out for her to see, allowing the false gem to shine in the light. "Now jewelry is a much better investment," she informed her. "Necklaces such as this guarantee beauty, they never wear out, and only one purchase is necessary to fully enjoy the attention and jealousy of ponies across Ponyville." She gave a quick smirk, eyes glancing behind her for a brief moment to see if the boys would even dare to compete.

Just two ponies? Really? The twins looked to each other incredulously... they had rehearsed that routine all night for JUST TWO PONIES? But, once their song had stopped they could hear their conversation perfectly. Flim's eyes narrowed on the new pony. "Well Flam, looks like we have some competition." "It looks like it" "What do you say we... welcome her to town?" "You read my mind"
In almost perfect unison, the brothers hopped down from the machine, which finally puttered to a stop. "Well, Madame..." Flim started, simply using it as a title, not actually knowing that's what ponies called her. "You certainly do bring up a good point. But it seems you're missing the most important one of all. You shouldn't be drawing attention away from yourself! You're the one ponies want to talk to, after all, isn't that right miss?" he asks, addressing the other pony. "And the bright side is, Apple Skin Oil's special magical mixture makes sure that its effects last."
"And, as they say, looks aren't everything" Flam adds, directing his comment at Marian. "You see, Apple Skin Oil helps in all kinds of ways, keeps the mind sharp, helps with memory." He takes off his hat, smiling at the two mares. "And we can't say for sure, but we think it does help a bit with a pony's charm"
Flim stepped in, usually liking to handle the sales end for himself, thinking that his brother had already made the mistake of smiling at Marian a bit too long. There was a very precise art to this after all. "Now I don't think I've seen you in town before miss." Allow us to introduce ourselves."
The brothers hopped up onto their hind hooves in unison, taking off their hats and bowing. "Flim" "And Flam" "Traveling Salesponies Nonpareil" "At your service!"

So it's a competition they want, eh? Terrific, Marian needed to brush up on some of her skills. The mare gave a chuckle, thinking that they wouldn't be 'nonpareil' for very long. In her mind, the red-headed mare before her became the prize; though the reward would only be a couple of bits, it was the message she was hoping to send to Flim and Flam that she was more concerned with. It was likely that they had been in town far longer than she (which was quite risky, in her mind), but Marian had no problem with driving them out of business. Marian eyed each brother as they spoke, holding a smile though her eyes were full of envy. Who knew brotherhood would end up being such an excellent sales scheme? Marian could never imagine working with someone of her own blood like that. She did notice the flaw, however. They were too up-front. It would certainly be their downfall, and Marian would make sure that it was at her hooves. It was a shame that she didn't have a hat of her own to tip; it certainly would have added insult to injury. "Madam Marian," she announced, figuring it would be at least a little bit polite to give everyone her own name. She decided to throw a made-up title in there too. Well, why not? "Canterlot's number one jewelry dealer."
She continued smiling with that sly look in her eyes. Long-term eye contact was key, for she knew how powerful a stare could be. She thought nothing of their charms, well aware that it was part of a salespony's act. However, it seemed that the other mare wasn't as intelligent as she, telling by the way she seemed to be falling for their scam. Marian would certainly be turning that around quickly. "While I'm sure these gentlemen have good intentions," she began, "are you really going to trust stallions to tell you what's best for a mare?" She gave another glance at the unicorns before turning to whisper in to her ear. "The last time I did that, the boy robbed me!" Moving back, she spoke up again, this time so Flim and Flam could hear her. "Now this isn't just a plain old necklace. It was once touched by royalty! Yes, Princess Luna herself used magic to create that special heart-shaped sapphire in the center." After pointing to the gem, She allowed the necklace to twirl before the mare's eyes, practically teasing her with it. "Being created by such royal magic, it is just filled with magical properties. This particular item has been known to bring good fortune to any pony who wears it. Did I mention it goes perfectly with your eyes?"

Flim's eyes narrowed. This meant war. She wanted competition, it's competition she'll get. "Well, Madame Marian..." Flim tipped his hat to her. "If I'm not mistaken, you're new around here, so I'd like to welcome you to our lovely little town of Ponyville." He put plenty of stress on "our", making sure that she knew whose territory she was invading.
"Now then, she sure makes up a good point. But this isn't a product exclusively for mares any more than a quill or trumpet is. When we say it does it all, we really do mean all." Flim was not liking the suddenly suspicious look that red-maned mare was giving them.
"And as wonderfully rare as something like your necklace is, Madame, why pay so much so you can use a princess's name? Isn't somepony's own beauty what mattters? Don't you want your name heard on everypony's lips instead of somepony else's. Don't get me wrong, you've got quite the piece there, but perhaps you should be looking for an antiques collector? After all, why would an intelligent pony like you waste your hard-earned bits on good fortune, when you can make your own?"
Flam stepped in once again, getting a brief look from Flim. While Flim was focused on getting a sale out of the mare, it looked like his brother was focused on the competition. "Why don't you try out a bottle for yourself? See what you're missing out on. Don't get me wrong, Madame, I'm not saying that a pretty pony like yourself needs her beauty enhanced, but what pony isn't ready to take an extra step towards perfection?"
Flim regarded his brother's attempts carefully. He's certainly trying to charm a sale out of her, and seems to be doing a better job than usual. But the thought of just giving her a bottle nearly broke his smile. Handouts, to him, was a step away from desperation.

Marian kept the smirk on her face, finding these boys absolutely unbelievable. She couldn't help but laugh at their assumption. Traveling salesponies controlling a town? She couldn't help but wonder how long they thought being welcome would last before ponies got absolutely sick of their presence. With the songs to top it all off, their sales scheme would eventually come off as utterly annoying by everyone in town, and then there goes the business! Then again, maybe if they did end up staying long enough, they would lose all of their credibility. Oh, what a lovely day that would be. "Oh, this is your town?" she asked, mocking an innocent-like tone, showing that she obviously didn't care. In a lower tone, she added, "I think Ponyville could use a break from the boys stuffing products down their throats, wouldn't you say?" Aiming the comment at the two brothers, Marian added a wink to the end of her statement.
She practically ignored their rebuttal altogether, really only focusing on the main point they were trying to make. "They just love their colorful vocabulary, don't they?" she thought, noticing that they sure loved using that salespony attitude to its' fullest. She may have been annoyed, but she was still a lady, and remaining calm in this situation would most definitely pay off for her in the end. About to respond to Flim's claim, she was quickly cut off by the other brother. Oh, a compliment...how interesting. It was certainly unlike most of the outgoing-type salesmen she's encountered. But she knew she mustn't fall for it, for it was surely a trap. At last having her chance to say something, the sly grin returned to her face. "You two don't seem to realize the reality of it all; ponies feed off of anything that can sweep them away from their dull lives, and what better item to do that than Luna's necklace?" She stuck out a hoof, attempting to keep the bottle from her sight. "I've no need for such items." Her attention turned back to the mare, who seemed quite puzzled by their sudden competition. "I don't know about you, but I certainly don't appreciate the idea of smearing food products across my face. Might as well take applesauce and wash up!" Marian snorted in disgust.

Flim grinned. Perfect. She was on the attack, not realizing she was casting insults at the brothers right in front of the customer, and seeming a bit-too-obviously defensive. A good salespony always plays to the customer's emotions first and thought second, or so he believed.
"Well, Madam!" he said, sounding more offended than he really was. "First off, you won't be making many friends calling interesting ponies such as this lovely mare here dull and insisting that they need a distraction. Second, to equate our carefully concocted and magically enhanced miracle mixture with common food products, you may as well be calling that lovely necklace of yours a rock!"
Of course, despite this, the brothers were entirely focused on Marian. Neither of them even noticed her start to back away from the trio, eyes wide and an uncomfortable expression on her face.
"Now... what he means to say is..." Flim was starting to get a little annoyed by Flam's attempts at helping. "We're making no progress just standing here and bickering. We're all getting off on the wrong hoof here, maybe we can come to some sort of... agreement?" Flim just stared. What was he doing? Some kind of good-pony bad-pony routine? And why did he have to be the bad pony?

Marian seriously misjudged the stallions; she'd admit they were making her seem like the bad guy. Well, it's not like she wasn't a terrible pony, but she was sure that these gentlemen could get just as bad as she could. They had taken advantage of her desperate need for competition and turned it against her. "Excellent," she thought. It helped prove something that had been nagging at her ever since the brothers rolled up on their strange contraption. Their combined power was key in their ability to sell; the two could easily make a contradicting pony get lost in their own words. By throwing charms in there as well, it was fairly simple to overpower the competition. "Well, we all have dull lives of you think about it," she said, a bit of a flirting tone in her voice. "So why not have a good conversation starter to spice things up a bit?"
Marian's ear twitched a bit, noticing that the mare was attempting to escape their little quarrel. Could she blame her? Getting caught in the middle of a sale battle, especially one with Marian, wasn't such a pretty picture. So, Marian decided to do something that most in the salespony world would call drastic. Marian didn't see it as much of an issue, considering the fortune she already had built-up. Turning her back to the stallions once again, Marian focused on the other mare for the last time. She stepped back toward her, catching her just before she could get away. "Here," she said, gently grasping the mare's hoof with her own. Marian lowered the necklace into the mare's grip. "It's yours, free of charge. I apologize for my..." Another glance at Flim and Flam. "...our behavior. When your friends ask about this beautiful gem, tell them Madam Marian gave it to you." Offering a smile, Marian allowed the pony to leave.
Now free of one of the expensive object's replicas, Marian looked back to Flim and Flam with a smug grin. They'd surely be confused with her method, but this was more about publicity than earning a quick bit. Marian certainly didn't need it. Perhaps that was one of their sales flaws then; quick earnings wouldn't get a pony far unless there was a huge crowd behind it, and in this case there wasn't.
Figuring Flam was the more sensible one (Flim seemed a bit too cocky), Marian directed most of her attention toward him. "Now I don't know about you gentlemen, but I prefer to discuss business over dinner," she informed them. "Perhaps someplace in your town?"

Flim smirked back. "Who says that somepony can't be their own conversation starter?" Just when the two of them thought they had gotten the last laugh, their competitor did something drastic, and made a move that was entirely unheard-of in the Flim Flam business strategy. She just gave it away. This mare was either an idiot, or smarter than they were giving her credit for.
The brothers were dumbfounded for a moment, and before they could consider following up with a rebuttal of their own, the mare was gone. They turned their attention to Marian, finding her attempt at 'publicity' absurd. After all, they never had trouble getting their names heard when it was sung and performed in front of crowds.
Flam smiled at the offer, thinking he was getting somewhere, meanwhile, Flim looked almost offended. "If you'll excuse us for a moment, Madam." His voice was bitter, now that his salespony business was over. He pulled his mustachioed twin aside.
What followed next looked like an argument full of the usual intensity you can only achieve with your own family. Words were tossed around, only a few could be heard beyond the brothers. "...the enemy..." "...agreement..." "...three's a crowd..." "...reasonable..." "...war..." While the argument wasn't very vocal, it certainly was animated, with Flim magically removing his hat to give his brother a light THWAP! Now and then, probably because he made a comment that Flim considered ridiculous.
Finally, the brothers returned. "Fine..." Flim replied bitterly, clearly annoyed that the brothers came to this agreement. "We'll discuss business over dinner. There's a small cafe not far from here." Without another word, he trotted over to their machine and plopped himself down on one of the couches that were installed to the front to serve as comfortable seating. Flam, was a bit more gentle. "You're welcome aboard, Madam, no need to walk." He hopped up onto the machine, holding out a hoof to her, and earned himself a glare from Flim. "Well... mostly welcome"

Marian simply kept her little grin as the stallions looked on. Her drastic action had completely dumbfounded them. The best part of Marian's job, as she had always believed, was watching other ponies squirm. Though customers were usually the victims, seeing pressure crack under other salesponies was certainly a treat. In the end, Marian realized that it was Flim who would end up being her problem; he wasn't as accepting of the offer, and it certainly showed when Flam excused himself to speak with Flim on the matter. She couldn't help but chuckle at the brothers' bickering. "Just like children," she thought as a couple of their words floated to her ears. She raised an eyebrow at a few that interested her, though she wasn't entirely aware of what they were actually talking about. Finally, breaking free of the argument, the two returned to her side, quite willing to have that dinner. "Excellent," she said with a smile. She followed the two to their contraption, rolling her eyes a bit at Flim's child-like attitude toward the agreement. "Why thank you," she said, taking Flam's hoof and pulling herself to the comfortable couch conveniently placed near the front of the mobile machine. Picking a spot, she allowed herself to sit right next to Flim, making sure there was enough room for Flam to sit on the opposite side of her. With Marian in the middle, there was no way they could avoid conversation.
Tossing her mane a bit, she awaited the feeling of motion beneath her. Curious, she gave a good look around at the device, truly amazed that a pair of ponies could conjure this sort of thing up. "You've got quite an interesting vehicle here," she said, trying to stir up conversation that could certainly get them talking. "I've never seen anything like it before...did you two build it on your own?"

Little details can make a big difference, both the brothers knew that. So when Marian insisted on literally coming between them, both of them were instantly suspicious. Their horns started to glow as the machine roared to life and began chugging down the road. Flim had no problem showing his distaste, after all, she wasn't nor would she ever be a customer. Flim, however, quickly found a distraction for his discomfort.
"None of our machines are for sale, if that's what you're getting at" Flim snapped, interrupting Flam, who had already opened his mouth to say something. Flim just looked back down the road, clearly annoyed at both of them, and apparently taking control of steering.
Flam tried again. "You'll have to excuse him. Yes, thank you ma'am, I built this machine myself... or rather, I repurposed it from the Super Speedy Cider... from an old Cider press" He decided against using the full name, knowing it earned itself a bad reputation that the brothers were only just starting to redeem themselves from. "I'm quite the tinker, which has been a valuable asset to our business." He smiled proudly. "Our machines are like nothing in all of Equestria!"
He seemed to see no harm in explaining their already-fairly-obvious setup between the two of them. "Flim here usually handles sales, while I manage the products."
"Products she has no business knowing!" Flim seemed to disagree with Flam's assumption. To which the mustachioed brother simply held up his hooves defensively and out of resignation, going quiet.

Marian gave a somewhat maniacal laugh at Flim's defensive attitude. What would a mare like her do with a machine like this? Attract unnecessary attention, that's what. Though all of that attention worked for their sales technique, it certainly wouldn't do for Marian's. "I have no use for a big machine such as this," she explained to Flim once she stopped chuckling. "Your device produces your product, while I am after items that have been created by others; for example, the beautiful gem I gave away back there." She chuckled again, not quite ready to tell them that the item was a mere replica. "Besides, how would I use it if it runs on magic?"
Turning to Flam, Marian offered a much friendlier tone. "But anyway, your work is absolutely marvelous. I'm sure it draws quite a crowd." She turned her head around a bit, getting a view at the back end of the machine. The green glow of their magic was actively pumping the vehicle, and Marian could see that it was actually quite complex. Turning to Flam (knowing that he seemed to be much more willing than the brother on her opposite side), Marian asked, "Care to show me how it works sometime?" Honestly, she didn't care all that much about all of the technical things that went into building machinery, but she was curious as to how they produced their products and how it all tied in to their salespony strategy.

Magic... She had Flim there. Sure, his salespony secrets were safe, but he didn't really like getting outwitted like that. After all, magic was such second-nature to him now, that he barely knew the difference when he was helping to power the machine. He went quiet, focusing on the road, and making sure that he didn't run over anypony that happened to be walking towards them.
Flam, however was about as flustered by Marian's friendly compliments as he was excited to talk about his invention. "Oh it certainly does, but not quite as big of a crowd as some of our other machines. Well... not yet anyway, you should have seen it when we first came to town back when this was a cider press, we-."
Flim cleared his throat to cut his brother off before he brought up a story both of them would rather forget. He kept his eyes on the road, pretending like he wasn't even listening to the two of them.
Flam, however, continued. "Why sure, I'd love to show you sometime." he glanced at his brother, directing his next statement more towards him than to Marian. "I see no harm in it, seeing as how you have no use for the machine anyway." He turned his attention back to her with a smile. "She's due for a tune-up anyway, so I'll be opening her up soon enough anyway."
"Here we are." Fim finally announced, pulling the machine to a stop and hopping off and heading to one of the many outdoor tables. "Clop Cafe"

Behind Marian's smile lied a devious mind. The plots in her head were already beginning to build up, and she could tell already that if they could in fact come to a business agreement, it would be one of the wisest investments she's ever made. Before the other two had the chance, Marian peeled herself from the comfortable seat and hopped from the machine back on to the ground. Her hooves clicked as she landed, and she took the chance to check the contents of her saddle bag, still hung over her back. Her prize, fortunately, was still concealed within the pouch she had put it in earlier, and the replicas remained scattered at the bottom of the bag. Satisfied, she turned to the cafe's tables and searched around for an empty one, quickly locating one that just happened to have three seats.
She gave a brief glance toward the brothers, her accented voice traveling back to them. "This spot should be fine," she said before moving closer in to the trio of chairs. Picking one of the seats, she removed her saddle bag and placed it safely across the back part of the chair. She didn't have to worry about anyone taking it; Marian wouldn't hesitate to bite somepony's head off. Though she was quite a sleazy pony, she still had manners. Marian sat up straight, hooves on her lap, patiently waiting for the brothers to take their opportunity beside her.
ooc; Sorry this is so short, I have a dumb party to go to. >_>
