Snowdrop the daredevil stunt mare looked over the edge of roof of town hall with more than a little anxiety. As though echoing the chilly feeling in her stomach, an icy wind whipped through her mane and tail, sending them fluttering like little flags. It was a long way down! How she got up there was an amusing story in itself, involving a runaway kite, a trampoline, and a freak blast of wind that had carried her away. But how she was going to get down was another story, and one that was not (at this particular moment) quite so funny to her.
It's not so bad as it looks Snowdrop told herself, I'm sure I heard it was easier to fly by dropping off a height than by taking off from the ground. It's something about building up speed, I think. Although not particularly afraid of heights, she did have a particular fear of smashing into the ground, one that had been reinforced several times by unfortunate cloud accidents. Anyway, I cant stay up here forever! I'm gonna have to try it.
Snowdrop the Daredevil Mare backed up to the very peak of the roof. If speed was an issue, she was going to give herself every chance, and that meant a running start! She took a deep breath, reared up and then and charged forward with all her might... Only to chicken out at the next to last second and skid to a perilous stop, all four hooves on the edge, leaning way over, wings flapping madly, trying to regain her balance. How she managed it, Snowdrop could never say, but somehow, she pulled herself back from falling over the edge.
Panting hard, Snow sat down for a moment to stop her legs from trembling. Okay, so that wouldn't work so well. She eventually got up on her feet again and began a close, careful inspection all the way around the pavilion, looking for a way down. It was a shame, therefore, that she stepped on a broad patch of ice not a meter on. All four feet shot out from underneath the little Pegasus and with a scream, she slid right off the roof!

Kale was having a good day. He'd cooked for the breakfast shift at the cafe, and with one customer's order to 'surprise me,' he'd gotten to put his own flair on their usual meal. Buoyed, if also slightly embarrassed, by the compliments that followed, he left his workplace in high spirits. Next on his agenda for the day was a stop by the town library. He'd asked Twilight for help to find references for any dishes native to Ponyville, and thrilled at the prospect of anypony wanting to do research, the unicorn had agreed.
Now, several minutes later, Kale walked briskly across the center of town, Provincial Pony Platters and Pabulum floating along behind him. As he'd forgotten to bring a bag, Twilight had enchanted the tome to follow him until he reached home; even now, it remained enveloped in the purplish hue of her magic. Lost in his own thoughts, the white pegasus only stopped when something fell onto his nose. Transferring it from his snout to one hoof, he squinted closely to see what it was.
The answer gave him pause.
Why was it snowing? Though winter was on its last legs, there were no clouds in the area to dump ice on him. Besides, nowhere else seemed to be getting any snowfall. Looking up, the stallion saw a small flash of movement on the roof of town hall. What's somepony doing up there? he thought to himself. As far as he knew, the roof of the building was long fixed, and nopony was keen on being the one to break it again.
With a shrug, Kale prepared to move on. He'd barely taken a step, though, when an ear-piercing scream caused him to freeze. Whipping his gaze upward once more, he saw--to his horror--a foal plummeting toward him!
There was no time to waste. Leaping into the air, the pegasus began flapping his wings as fast as they would go, hurtling upward as Snowdrop hurtled down. By the time he reached her, she had fallen about two-thirds of the way to the ground, and her momentum and weight, suddenly pushing down on the outstretched front legs he caught her with, nearly knocked him to the ground, as well. Fortunately, he managed to stabilize in time, and landed relatively gently (and, more importantly, on purpose).
Had Kale stopped to think about what he just did, he might have felt proud. No doubt the Wonderbolts would have responded the same way, if a bit quicker and smoother. (Or at least, he liked to think so.) But he was more interested in why he'd had to catch a falling pony in the first place, so, panting, he made as much apparent. "Are you alright? What were you doing up there?" he asked the filly, barely expecting a response that could be considered sane.

For a long moment, Snowdrop clung fiercely to the thing which had stopped her fall so painlessly. She had no idea what it was, for she had shut her eyes the minute she felt the roof leave her behind. For all her 'daredevil mare' imaginings, when there was real danger she was as frightened as any foal could be! But she knew that this new thing she hung onto was something safe and warm and strong and ...alive. She knew it was alive because almost as soon as she stopped falling, it had spoken to her.
"Are you alright? What were you doing up there?"
It spoke in such an incredulous tone that she blushed in embarrassment, even before Snowdrop opened one eye a peep to look around. Being encouraged by seeing the ground so close, she opened both eyes and looked around again before meeting Kale's gaze sheepishly. Uh-oh. It was an adult and she...suspected she was in trouble.
"I was... trying to get down." The filly said. And then she added, as a little joke, "See, it worked!" She laughed a bit weakly, as though at herself, but it was a very shaky, very wobbly little laugh. "Actually, I, uh... was chasing a kite, and there was this gust of wind and when I caught the string, it just blew me away, and then I got stuck up there. Then I slipped." If she hadn't been so frightened and confused, she probably could have made a better story of it. Suddenly she remembered something really important!
"You saved me!" Snowdrop exclaimed in surprise. Then, a little shyly and awkwardly... "Thank you for that. I was scared!"

For a few moments, it seemed as though the filly had fainted. Slowly, tentatively, she opened one blue eye, peering at the ground, as if to make sure it was still there. Eventually, she met his gaze, and Kale found himself rather surprised at her expression. She looked as though she expected him to yell at her or something.
Clearly, she did not know the stallion at all.
"I was... trying to get down." Still acting decidedly skittish, she continued, "See, it worked!"
Had the situation been different, Kale might have laughed (less nervously) at her joke. After all, he'd done the same thing once;his parents' party guests, unfortunately, had seemed less than amused, and he'd spent the remainder of that evening hiding in the corner. Of course, this wasn't really the same situation, and perhaps he was reading too much into her behavior, but he felt sympathy nonetheless. However, he got the impression that, as the adult, he should be more stern, so he did his best to keep a straight face.
"Actually, I, uh... was chasing a kite, and there was this gust of wind and when I caught the string, it just blew me away, and then I got stuck up there. Then I slipped."
It was quite a story, even without Snowdrop adding her characteristic flair. Raising an eyebrow, the pegasus looked down at the smaller pegasus with a suspicious expression. She didn't seem to be lying, but at the same time, it was a bit much. Did she really expect Kale to believe she'd been carried away by her kite?
It was then that he noticed she had wings. Immediately, a more knowing look crossed his features. No doubt she'd somehow managed to flutter her way up to the roof; then, either through nerves or exhaustion, she couldn't fly herself back down. His instructors at flight camp had mentioned how often that sort of thing occurred, mentioning one filly who got stuck on a cloud for half a day before anypony found her. Given that, he had to figure Snowdrop was one lucky filly.
"You saved me!"
"I...I guess I did," Kale responded, an undercurrent of excitement tinging his voice. He'd never done anything remotely like this; heck, he never really flew fast at all. He'd certainly never done anything that anypony could describe as heroic. Maybe Snowdrop wasn't the only lucky one.
"Thank you for that. I was scared!"
"You and me, both," he said honestly. Glancing pointedly at her wings, then back to her face, the stallion asked, "Can't you fly yet?...what's your name?"

As she had related her tale, Snowdrop had kept large, anxious eyes fixed on his face, only looking away to follow his gaze to her own small wings. As though aware of the double scrutiny, they snapped shut and folded back of their own accord, perhaps trying to hide from their embarrassing failure to work properly. Even so, looking back to his face, Snowdrop saw an expression so understanding that she blushed again, without quite knowing why.
Upon being set gently on the ground, the friendly, stable, reliable ground which had never seemed so welcoming despite all her attempts to get away from it- the filly scuffed a hoof shyly a moment, looking everywhere but at Kale for a moment. When she did look back at him, she caught him giving her wings a thoughtful stare before meeting her gaze.
"Can't you fly yet?...what's your name?"
If Kale had known the dreaded horror she had of hearing the word "yet" on that question, he would have never put it there. For quite a while, Snowdrop had been consoling herself with the consideration that she was still pretty small, and that maybe wings had to grow a bit before they were good for much.
But the way he put it, apparently foals her size were supposed to be able to fly, and that must mean, at best, that she was behind her age group. And worst, it might mean that she would never fly. At once, her gaze dropped to the ground as though the strings holding it up had been cut, and everything about the little filly seemed to droop slightly
"I'm Snowdrop..." she replied softly, and indeed, she did rather look as though she were beginning to wilt just like the little flower in a summer's heat. "...And no, I can't fly. Even though I try to practice every day..."

Almost immediately, Kale knew he'd said the wrong thing. The way the filly's head dropped like a stone made that painfully obvious. Even her wings had folded away quickly, as though she might be able to pretend she was an earth pony and get away with falling.
Good plan.
"I'm Snowdrop...And no, I can't fly. Even though I try to practice every day..."
It was likely further proof that her kite story wasn't entirely true, but Kale had no intention of pursuing that. At this point, he was more concerned with the fact that Snowdrop looked utterly humiliated. A surge of guilt rushed through the older pegasus; if this was his fault, then it was up to him to fix it. Not that he knew how, of course. He was no miracle worker. He wasn't even that strong a flyer, landing somewhere on the scale between 'normal pegasus' and 'Fluttershy.'
Nonetheless, he'd made somepony feel bad, and that could not stand.
"W-well, that's alright," Kale offered. "Everypony can at some point." He'd consciously avoided using the word 'eventually,' knowing that would probably just make things worse. Of course, what he had said wasn't much better, so, biting his lip, the stallion continued. "I could, um...I could try and help you...if you want..."
It wasn't much of an offer. As mentioned, Kale was no Rainbow Dash, and hardly the sort of role model a potential flyer would look up to. But if there was anything that he could do to make Snowdrop feel better, then as Celestia was his witness, he was going to do it.
Whether or not he could do it well was a different issue.

Despite his attempt to reassure her, Snowdrop was just on the verge of a storm of tears. She knew not everypony learned to fly, unicorns never did, nor earth ponies. Her own case was already unique enough, not being able to stand on clouds. All pegasus ponies could stand on clouds, no matter their age. It wasn't a learned skill, it was a natural gift.
But she didn't have it.
Perhaps she was really an earth pony with wings, useless wings, at that. Maybe she never would be able to fly. The ground blurred as her eyes started to fill with warm tears. Grounded for life! She didn't know how she was going to bear it... And having to explain it to other ponies... ! That felt worst of all!
"I could, um...I could try and help you...if you want..."
Snowdrop's head shot up, trying to see if this Pegasus was serious. She couldn't tell at first, and she rubbed her eyes with a foreleg to get the tears out of her way. She looked at him again with such a mix of wonder, hope, and uncertainty. Would he really try and help? She had often wished for a teacher. Had she been able to, she would have attended a flight camp! But these were always held in the sky.
Snow had occasionally asked her relations, but she had a surprising number of non-pegasai in her family tree, (another worry) and the ones who could were often too busy. And Granny Weathermane, who she was staying with now, was too old to fly, even if she could stay awake long enough to give a lesson.
"I ... I do want!" she breathed, her voice coming out in almost a little whisper. "I want to fly more than anything! I would do anything! Will you really help?"

"I ... I do want!"
Practically in the blink of an eye, Snowdrop's downcast demeanor melted away. In its place was pure glee, so concentrated that the filly could barely put it in words. As much as Kale was relieved that she wasn't upset anymore, this concerned him a bit: he didn't want to get her hopes up for nothing. In all likelihood, even if he was a good teacher, she wouldn't be flying after one lesson. At best, she'd be a champion glider. Then again, that was probably better than falling like a stone. At least she wouldn't have to be quite so concerned about heights.
"I want to fly more than anything! I would do anything! Will you really help?"
"Well, it'd be pretty mean of me to say no, wouldn't it?" Kale said, a faint smile on his face. It amused him, how incredulous she seemed at his offer; as though he really might tell her he could help, then immediately reverse course and ditch her?
Hardly the heroic thing to do.
"Come on, there's a good hill in the park," he said, turning to face that direction. "It's as good a place to start as any." With that, he began to walk, making sure that Snowdrop was keeping up with him. "I'm Kale, by the way."

Snowdrop had to admit, that for him to offer and then snatch it back so quickly would have been mean, the depths of lowness. Such a pony as that probably wouldn't have offered to help; actually, such a cruel pony probably wouldn't have saved her in the first place. It wasn't really that she thought him capable of such a thing, (for in saving her, he instantly gained every good attribute in her eyes) it was more that she could not believe her good fortune! First, a rescue and then lessons?!
With a little bound, Snowdrop skipped into place at Kale's side and began trotting to keep up with his longer stride. "I'm happy to meet you, Kale!" she said exuberantly. And then, thinking on the events of a few moments ago and events not too far ahead, she added "Very glad!" and giggled.
"I'm new here in Ponyville. I've come to live with Granny Weathermane. Do you know her? She's a retired flier and she sleeps all the time, but I like her. I think she's like my great-great aunt. She's some relation, anyway. She's really nice. Everyone in Ponyville is really nice, actually. Like you!" And here, Snowdrop looked up at Kale adoringly. In doing so, she caught sight of his cutie mark. In her mind, she was already imagining herself in flight, and this was probably why she let her mouth run on ahead so carelessly.
"Hey, your Cutie mark is Kale too? Why is that? Is your special talent being a vegetable?" The moment the words were out of her mouth, her mind came to full attention and demanded to know what her mouth thought it was doing!! She tried to cover her mouth with both front hooves in shock at her unintentional rudeness and instantly tripped!
"No, wait! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to say that! " She said, bounding back to her feet and looking up at Kale, anxiously. "I mean, that's not what I meant to say! I mean, I was thinking of something else and it just sort of came out! I meant, does your special talent have something to DO with vegetables, kale specifically?"

"I'm happy to meet you, Kale!...Very glad!"
Kale just smiled, quite content to simply listen as Snowdrop launched into a veritable tornado of words, and some word-like things. He wasn't quite sure, as she was going a mile a minute. He had to say, it was refreshing; her unbridled expression was a nice change from both the guarded upper-class ponies of his youth, as well as from his own inability to say everything he wanted. Not that Snowdrop was rattling off her deep, dark secrets, though. Unless, of course, her having a Granny was a fact hidden close to her heart.
That was unlikely, though.
"Hey, your Cutie mark is kale too? Why is that? Is your special talent being a vegetable?"
Brows arching, Kale turned an incredulous look at Snowdrop. He'd received plenty of questions about his talent before, plenty of them less than friendly, but nopony had ever asked if he was skilled at being a vegetable. He liked to think he was more useful than that. But the filly's immediate look of regret, coupled with her rapid-fire apologizing, prevented him from feeling any sort of offense for long. If anything, he had to sympathize, watching her try to bounce back from such a faux pas.
"I mean, that's not what I meant to say! I mean, I was thinking of something else and it just sort of came out! I meant, does your special talent have something to DO with vegetables, kale specifically?"
Smiling, Kale turned his gaze back forward. "My talent's cooking. I guess my name was just a lucky fit." He continued to trot toward the park, starting to sink into his own thoughts. He'd never really thought about it much before; it was just one of those odd coincidences he'd shrugged at and moved on from. After all, he'd been named for a great-grandfather, one whose talent had nothing to do with cooking. Like he'd said: lucky fit.
Before long, the two pegasi reached the top of the small hill in the park. A light breeze had picked up again, blowing from behind them toward the center of Ponyville. Spreading his wings to get a feel for the wind, Kale thought silently for a moment, nodded, and turned to face the other way. "Alright," he said, clearing his throat in the same manner as the instructors at flight camp. "Since you're still young, your wings might not be strong enough to just take off. So we're gonna give you a running start, first."
Rearing up, the stallion then broke into a gallop down the hill, wings spread out horizontally. About halfway down the hill, he leaped, and with two flaps of his wings, gained enough air to glide in a large circle back toward Snowdrop. Landing and trotting the remaining distance, he said, panting, "Like...like that. Just run as fast as you can, and when you're at top speed, jump and flap your wings." Glancing down the hill, then back at Snowdrop, he asked, "Ready?"

Snowdrop was immensely relieved that after one very startled, incredulous look, Kale was willing to overlook her silly blunder and was even kind enough to pass it by without mentioning or holding any ill will. She, however, was much harder on herself. How could she say such a foolish thing? Her mouth replied (in her imaginings, of course) that it wasn't to blame, how was it to know better when the part that was supposed to be in charge of all the knowing was off doing something else? This argument might have gone on, but when Kale mentioned that his talent was cooking and that his name had just been lucky chance, she thought about that instead.
If a person's talent was cooking, he might have pots or pans, or a knife, or any kind of tool for cooking. He might have parsley, or peppers, or any food, as his mark. She remembered seeing a pony, she thought her name was 'Juicy Juice' who had a blender for a cutie mark. So what were the odds that Kale would have, well, kale? Too high! Or...was it low? There must be something more to it than luck, she thought. But then, cutie marks were mysterious.
They had reached the top of the hill and Snowdrop watched Kale's demonstration with rapt attention. Running start, just like she'd heard somewhere! Into the wind? That was new! she'd thought that the wind would slow you down and prevent you from getting up. But if Kale did it that way, he must be right! And she would do it that way too!
Throwing out her little wings with energy, Snowdrop announced she was ready and, just as Kale had done it, she reared and then charged down the hill boldly! When she thought she was at her top speed, she gathered herself together and made a great spring into the air, beating her wings hard!
From his vantage point on the hill, Kale would see two very important things. The first was that Snowdrop's flapping had no tempo or rhythm to it. Her wing-strokes were short and quick, then suddenly strong and slower, with no thought behind them. And this might not have been so bad, except for the second thing he would see- that they weren't even in sync with each other! One wing would be flapping like a little humming bird, and the other would be hardly moving at all! Then, as though remembering it was supposed to be working, the lazy wing would kick into full gear just as the other one gave it up!
With her wings working against each other like this, it probably didn't surprise Kale that had hardly passed the peak of her leap when she promptly tumbled, head first, into a lilac bush at the base of the hill. Though the twiggy bush took some effort to escape, the little filly scrambled out unhurt, gave herself a vigorous shake, and then trotted back up the hill to Kale, somewhat anxiously. "Maybe I should try that again..." she said apologetically. "Maybe I didnt get the leap right...."

It started with great promise and ended in great tragedy. Snowdrop had the running start down pat; in fact, Kale was surprised to see anypony with legs that short run that fast. He watched as she shot off like a dart downhill, her hooves making satisfying thuds as they hit the ground one after another. Before long, she reached the halfway point, gathered her strength, and launched herself into the air.
It was here where Kale's face went from smiling, to frowning, to making an odd mixture between a grimace and slack-jawed horror.
After her leap, Snowdrop seemed to lose control of her body. At least, that was what it looked like to the stallion; what other way was there to explain the way she was flapping her wings? Given her size, she looked like a broken toy. He didn't have much time to hope that this would, somehow, keep her airborne, before her brief ascent turned into an even briefer descent. Wincing as the filly plunged headfirst into a shrub, Kale found himself wondering how we was supposed to explain this to her Granny. Or the hospital. Or the police.
"Maybe I should try that again..." Snowdrop managed after extricating herself from the bush, causing her companion to sigh in relief. "Maybe I didnt get the leap right...."
"...nnnooo, it's not the leap, the leap's fine," Kale replied in a sort of half-mutter. Doing his best to put on an encouraging face (Celestia knew Snowdrop needed one), the pegasus continued in a more chipper tone. "I think I see what the problem is, though. Try, um...try just flapping your wings for me. Right here," he added quickly, not wanting the filly to go catapulting herself into another plant. With a bit of work and a good deal of luck, they could still get her that airtime today. At the very least, he might be able to make her look like she only had one brain in control of her wings.

Snowdrop wasn't in the least bit concerned about her tumble into the lilac. Such accidents were commonplace, everyday affairs to her, and the bush was a good deal softer than many places she had crashed. Picking herself up, giving herself a good shake, and making a second attempt had no dampening effect on her confidence. She had been more worried about Kale losing patience with her. But he didn't seem impatient, he seemed... concerned. And that worried her.
"...Nnnooo, it's not the leap, the leap's fine. I think I see what the problem is, though. Try, um...try just flapping your wings for me. Right here," Kale said.
Wonderingly, the filly swirled so that her back was to Kale, for the best veiw. Watching over her shoulder, to try and see what he saw, and feeling a little awkward all the while, (though she didn't know why it was) Snow's wings beat out a somewhat steady, even rhythm. Not fast enough to get off the ground of course, but had she been in the air, it might have kept her up longer.
Not seeing anything particularly noteworthy in her flapping, Snowdrop looked away to see if anyone was watching them- and There! It happened again! One wing missed it's beat. The other seemed to slow its pace, waiting to find the new pattern of beats, but the first was speeding up now, as though to make up for lost time. This accounted for both the lack of tempo in her flapping, and the un-synchronized wing strokes. But it was completely unconscious.
Sensing, rather than seeing, that something interesting had happened, Snowdrop turned her head to observe, and just as instantly, the wings were in perfect time again. She hadn't seen a thing. She looked up at Kale, quizzically.

Kale waited patiently as Snowdrop, obviously baffled by his request, turned and tentatively began flapping her wings. The stallion grew equally confused when he saw that they were moving in unison; even if they weren't quite at the speed necessary for sustained flight, they at least wouldn't cause the filly to flip over and plow into the dirt. But even if the problem had solved itself, it still brought up the new mystery of why.
Fortunately, it wasn't long before Kale had an answer. Evidently losing interest in her own efforts, Snowdrop began to look around the park, breaking eye contact with her wings. Within moments, they fell out of sync again, apparently moving of their own accord.
Of course, despite knowing the problem, Kale really wasn't certain how to fix it.
After several moments, Snowdrop turned back, giving the pegasus stallion a questioning look. For a few moments, he didn't meet her eyes, looking away pensively. "Yep, definitely know what the problem is," he said finally, shifting his gaze to the filly. "You're flapping your wings all..." Unsure how to phrase it, the stallion looked up, whirling one hoof in a small circle as he tried to figure it out. "...well, not together. You have to focus, make sure they're moving together; otherwise, you'll end up losing control."
Again, Kale had omitted a potential buzzword--in this case, 'again.' He hated being the one to have to tell Snowdrop what she was doing wrong. She seemed like such a cheerful foal, so it pained him to be the one who weighed her down with bad news. "Now...now try again, and really feel what you're doing. Don't lose focus." Maybe if you pay attention, I'll be able to give you GOOD news, Kale thought at Snowdrop.
Because if she let her mind wander, he sensed many more lilac bushes in her future.

Snowdrop looked from Kale to her wings and back again. She hadn't seen anything amiss herself, but Kale had said there was, so- She turned her head away so she couldn't see her wings and tried to feel her wings. It was odd, like feeling your eyelids or your ears. She obediently resumed her flapping, trying to keep track of what both wings were doing.
Flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap, flap...Snowdrop wasn't exactly taking off into the wild blue yonder, but she could feel some lift, and that was encouraging! ...Wait, did she miss a beat with the right wing? She glanced back sharply and sure enough, both wings were out of sync! (Again!) Frowning in confusion, she stopped both wings and started again. This time, she had barely gotten ten strokes in before they went off, and she was still watching them!
"That's weird!" Snowdrop finally exclaimed, watching them go off for the sixth time. "Why do they do that? My wings are acting silly, even when I'm paying attention to them! They just do it on their own!" She didn't know it, but her wings had gotten into a bad habit of doing their own thing, whenever and wherever, particularly when she was practicing flying.
Had she been able to attend flight camp, this trait would never have been allowed to begin. Had she been given the benefit of flight instruction, she might not have developed it into a bad habit. But as it was, she was starting at square negative one, and would have to break this habit before she even began to learn good ones! Only...
...how did a pony break a habit she wasn't even aware of doing?
