NARI
"Oh, sorry. Do I scare you?"
"Oh, sorry. Do I scare you?"
The Basics
Name: Nari
Nickname/Alias: The Listener.
Species: Unicorn.
Gender: Female.
Age: 20
Group: She's Loki's sister. I think you can figure this one out on your own.
Occupation: The Listener for the Darkness.
Appearance
Fur/Mane/Tail: Though both her main and tail tend to have a bit of the straggly-endedness that her brother shares, Nari does work to keep both in nice shape. She carefully combs her mane and tail each morning, so both are mostly straight, her mane often shockingly so, and very thick. Her mane and tail are a deep purple; so deep, in fact, that it's not difficult at all for the mare to blend in with the darkness of the Everfree Forest if need be. Her coat is also a dark grey; not as much when she is in the sunlight, but it, too, can disappear in the shadows.
Clothes/Accessories: Nari doesn't wear anything unless it serves a practical purpose. If it does; such as providing stealth, then great, she'll wear it, but she finds most clothes, especially like those that Rarity makes, to be frivolous and unnecessary.
Cutie Mark:
Nari's Cutie Mark is for her special talent; detecting a pony's worst fears. Were Nari another pony, she could have used it for good, to save ponies from their fears; but, since she is Darkness' ward and one of the Shadows, she uses it to detect a pony's fears, then telepathically tell them to her twin, who's special talent is to materialize them.
The reason that her special talent is shown in the form of a storm cloud and a lightning bolt is because she, as a child, was afraid of storms. She still is, to a degree, but not enough that she really lets it to deter her... and she shows it only enough that someone who knew her in and out, like her twin brother, would be able to detect her fear.
Overview: Nari is very cold. She moves with a sort of self-assured swagger, and her eyes are very dark and closed-off. She's short and curt with everyone save her brother and Darkness, who she regards as her family, and the other Elite Shadows, who she thinks of sort of as peers. The other Shadows, to her, are her underlings; and she feels no mercy for the double-life they are forced to lead by being good during the day and being hypnotized to report to Darkness in the night.
Personality
Personality Description: Loki is really the only pony in Equestria that Nari would mourn loosing; and, as such, he is the only pony that she really shows her true self to. When around him, she is lightly sarcastic, and actually will show emotion; notably laughter. She has a very dry and almost violent sense of humor, but can almost be described as relaxed and amiable.
With the Elite, often, the most they'll get out of Nari, even for their funniest joke, is a deep smirk. She's often quiet and cold, and, though she will make snide remarks of her own, they're very difficult to pinpoint, unless you know her, and, often, she'll direct sarcastic remarks to Loki, who is probably the only one who will get them. In reality, she isn't actually that hard to get along with; if you're the kind of pony that she actually likes. That's the hard part. It's not that you have to do anything specific, you just have to be somepony that doesn't annoy her.
To the general public, however, very contrary to how she is with Loki, Nari is even more closed-off and icy. She rarely, if ever smiles, and, if she ever does, it's only a little, tiny smirk. That's it. She's very harsh and merciless, and, if anypony questions her abilities, she makes sure they know just who they're dealing with.
Strengths:
- Detecting Fears (obviously).
- Being snarky.
- Knowing where she is on the power scale.
- Knowing not to overstep her bounds.
- Stealth.
Weaknesses
- Her connection to her brother; he is her vulnerability.
- Her desire for power.
- Physical Strength; she's strong, but not that strong.
- Once a pony has conquered their worst fear, she's pretty much useless.
- Since her brother is her voicebox, she's not so great at communicating what she needs to; especially if it has anything to do with emotions. Not her thing.
Fears:
- Losing her brother.
- Losing her power/abilities.
- Thunderstorms. It still applies, even though she knows how to control it.
Magical Specialty/Abilities: ...Pretty much anything that goes along with fears. While her brother is the illusionist, she works on the inside; and this actually extends past fears. She can even pick at a person's thoughts... not getting so direct as seeing what they're actually thinking, but she's more in touch intuitively with reactions, even if a pony tries to conceal them.
History
This is them when they're babies. Die from the cute. Die from it.
History: Nari and Loki were born to a quaint couple who lived in a cottage in the forest outside of Ponyville. Their mother had a glistening white coat and a stick-straight, deep purple mane; her cutie mark was an amethyst (as was, coincidentally--or not so--her name) and her talent was Jewel-finding. She was a unicorn, and found jewels faster then any other pony around. Their father had a dark grey coat and light hair; with some light undertone, though it was hard to tell what it was. Something earthy, to be sure; as the earth pony, seeming so far contrary to his sleek, glamourous wife, had a digging talent, to match the shovel on his flank.
They, day after day, never seeming to bore of the job or each other's company, mined. Amethyst found, at astonishing speeds, every deposit of jewels in the area, and her husband, his pace matching hers, dug them up.
When their two twins were born, however, (strangely enough, with the darkest qualities of both their parents; their mother's dark mane and their father's dark coat) they proved to be very quickly bored by the process. While their parents were out mining, since they absolutely refused to tag along and listen to their parents prattle on about boring things if they could help it, they found their own entertainment; often very physical, bordering on violent games that the two played. They were fiercely competitive when they were young, yet that never seemed to cause a rift between the two. All the same, they went home when their parents got home, they went inside, rested, had dinner. They never fought.
Not really.
When the two got old enough, their parents forced them to take the trek with them into town to sell the week's jewels, and, to the twins' relief, the job fell on only the two when they got big enough to carry all the jewels themselves.
The walks were quiet from then on, amazingly so; for, as the twins had grown, they had come to realize that they could hear each other think, and that no spoken word was necessary.
Now, that's not to say they never talked. Often, speaking with one's mouth came just as second nature, and if Nari felt like mentioning something to her brother, she'd often do so with words, just because she didn't think to just think it to him. Also, if either of the twins were lost in their own thoughts, wrapped up in some idea or fantasy, they might not 'hear' the thoughts of the other, while audio might more quickly snap them out of their reverie.
For whatever reason, while not all exchanges went on in their heads, the talks they had while walking in the the forest always did.
This could have been what kept them from Darkness' grasp for so long.
Nevertheless, there came a day where, against all odds, and against all their normal behaviors, the two fought; fought bitterly and like schoolchildren, and aloud.
If you asked her now, Nari would coolly remark that she little knew nor cared what the argument was about, and didn't remember either way. It wasn't important. What was important was the dark force that, when the twins realized they'd foolishly gotten themselves lost, eagerly lapped up their fright.
This may have been because Nari cowered at the thunder rumbling overhead; and turned to find her brother gone.
"--Loki!"
"He's not here." The voice was low, rumbling, like the voice of her fears, like the thunder overhead. She was only a young filly then, and she screamed. The lightening flashed, but it didn't penetrate the darkness swirling around her, like some sort of poisonous smoke.
She fainted; diamonds and rubies and emeralds scattering on the dirty forest floor.
She hasn't been seen by her parents, or any other pony in Ponyville, since.
Nari found out later that the voice that had spoken to her was from a creature who called itself Darkness. It had no other name, and it had no form, aside from the swirling, smoke-like blackness that surrounded her in the forest; though she knew not whether it was only her who saw him in this way. She didn't even see him all the time, sometimes, she could just see the shifts in the shadows of the room. That meant he was there.
Had she even wanted to go back to her parents, she wouldn't have been allowed to; a group of full-grown ponies, tall and dark and dangerous, both watched her and made sure she didn't escape... but her parents little mattered. She would have tried to escape for her brother, but she called for him in her mind, only to find that he, too, had been captured; and that he seemed much more frightened of Darkness then even she seemed to be. He was soon brought to her, and the twins, reunited, resigned to their fate.
They grew there, among those older ponies whom were known as the Elite, and of whom the twins were now the most pivotal part. Nari, ever so sensitive to the feelings of other ponies, could feel their discontent; could feel how they, after so many years of service, felt they should be valued more then these blank-flanked fillies (Nari would have protested that Loki was a colt, but she knew full well that the mare was only calling him a 'filly' to be mean) with not so much as a redeeming quality to their name.
Perhaps it was being surrounded by such ponies that gave Nari her future distaste for young ponies, herself.
Nevertheless, under the other Elite's judging gazes and Darkness' surprisingly careful eye, the two grew. They finally got their cutie marks, not long after they joined the cult in the forest (though Nari always did suspect that Darkness somehow made their cutie marks appear faster then they may have normally), both twins precisely at the same time. They were ushered into an audience with Darkness, at which Loki, as he always did, bowed, and Nari, as she always did, refrained.
Darkness explained what their cutie marks stood for, and how he has chosen them especially to carry out his will in Ponyville and all of Equestria.
Nari, smug, felt the stir of discontent at the words "Chosen Ones". She, still fairly young, didn't resist the urge to smirk back at the older ponies, then stick her nose in the air. They appreciated that even less.
As they grew, audiences with Darkness became more and more frequent. He seemed happy enough with their progress, as happy as he ever got, anyway, and the two never ceased to have ponies to practice their powers on; as Darkness seemed to have some strange supply of ponies that came into the forest. After they practiced on the ponies, the ponies were brainwashed into being one of Darkness' pawns. Nari, for one, thought them silly and stupid ponies, not to realize the power Darkness had to offer. She couldn't imagine resisting him so.
But, to each pony his own; and that was theirs. Their fate.
As she grew into marehood, Nari fully assumed her role as the leader of the Elite, alongside her twin brother. The other Elite knew better then to question her, as she spoke for Darkness, though they knew she felt how irritated they were. They rarely even saw Darkness anymore (not that they literally 'saw' him in the first place), because they heard everything he needed to say from his little messengers, the Chosen Ones.
But, of course, they knew that staying with Darkness, even if they didn't much like the twins, would end up serving them well, so they said nothing.
And, they ended up liking the twins well enough anyway; Nari may have used her power, but she certainly didn't abuse it. She knew that was one sure way to cause a mutiny.
So they, mostly united, content enough, laid in wait, the twins every so often practicing their powers on some unsuspecting pony who ventured into the forest, waiting for the day on which Darkness would take over and the Elite could reign over the ponies, all of them, who had been brainwashed to do Darkness' work; those who were mere shadows of their former selves.
Little did they know how soon that day would be.
