Dear Princess Celestia...
The Basics
Name: Twilight Sparkle
Nickname/Alias: Twi, Egghead, My Dearest and Most Faithful Student
Species: Unicorn Pony
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Group: Good pony
Occupation: Graduate Student of Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns; working on her thesis on the magic of friendship
Appearance
Fur/Mane/Tail: Twilight is, overall purple. Her fur is a midtone, neither dark nor light--perfectly matching the meaning of her first name. Her mane and tail are very straight, both having no more than one large, overarching curve from root to the tips of the hairs. The fur in her mane and tail is much darker than that of her body, the same color as the sky at midnight. However, two streaks of brighter color--one violet, and one pink--run through both, forming a sort of natural highlight. Her tail is rather long; conversely, her mane is styled fairly short, noticeably more 'cut' than those of most other ponies.
Clothes/Accessories: Twilight generally doesn't wear anything; being a practical sort, she doesn't usually find it necessary. Even when she does, her tastes run toward simplicity, so excessive 'frou frou' is not her thing.
Cutie Mark:
One large, pink, six-pointed star on top of a smaller, white star, surrounded by five white stars. It represents her special talent of magic.
Overview: Twilight isn't terribly interesting at first glance. She's of average build, if just a touch short, and on a good day she's not all that attention-grabbing. However, it's easy to tell when she's worried or upset; whether it's her mane going awry, her eyes twitching, or the unsettling way she's butchering a grin, she's never good at hiding her discomfort. This fortunately doesn't happen TOO often, though, and usually, she'll just wear a contented smile.
Personality
Personality Description: Twilight is, through and through, an academic. She's very intelligent, having spent most of her life studying under her mentor, Princess Celestia. Even separated from the school or her teacher, though, she constantly thirsts for knowledge, spending much of her spare time reading. Aside from this passion for learning, Twilight also tends to act academically, generally choosing to favor logic, planning, and rationality in any situation--even if it may not call for it.
This preference for order is very pervasive in Twilight's psyche. She is a chronic and compulsive checklist maker, going through reams of paper in virtually no time at all just to make sure everything goes according to plan. Of course, if it doesn't, well, that's when the fun begins. Her natural need for perfect order means that any of her plans going awry is very upsetting to the unicorn, especially when they involve Princess Celestia. And once she's stressed enough by this, her logic tends to fly out the window, turning her from a reasonable unicorn into a fountain of crazy.
When she's not driving herself into a frenzy, Twilight is a calm, amiable pony. Having learned what a joy friendship is, she's now much more open to meeting new ponies and socializing with those she's already met. Though she's not too shy to converse anymore, though, she is still fairly new to friendship, and thus has yet to grasp many of its nuances; thus, she may be swayed easily by whatever behavior she sees, even if it's not the most normal (for example, Pinkie's absolute refusal to tell a secret, even when it's a good idea to).
Strengths:
Weaknesses
Fears:
Magical Specialty/Abilities: Seeing as Twilight's special talent is magic, she's able to utilize a nice variety of spells, unlike most unicorns.
History
History: Twilight Sparkle was the second child born to her parents, Star and Crescent Sparkle. The small family lived in Canterlot, though they didn't take part in the high society most ponies would associate with the city. After all, though they were well off, they weren't truly wealthy; nor were they part of any glamorous industry or the royal court. Thus, Twilight's childhood was initially fairly normal, right up until she was seven. That year, the Summer Sun Celebration was held in Canterlot, and the filly managed to squeeze her way to the front of the crowd. It was sure to be a good show.
Twilight had no idea how right that was.
Though she knew how close she was to the front, the little unicorn hadn't realized just how close she would be to Princess Celestia she would be--or how dazzling her magic would be. It was the most amazing thing Twilight had ever seen, and from that moment on, she had a new goal in life: to master magic herself. To that end, she persuaded her (somewhat bemused) parents to get her a massive stack of books on the subject, covering everything from history to theory to instructions. Once she had the reading material, the filly dove into it hungrily, drinking in every word in utter fascination. Before too long, she was ready to try her first spell: turning the pages of the book she was reading. It wasn't much, but it was a start, and when she finally managed to do it, it was like she'd opened the door into an entire new world.
For months, she read. And read. And read. Eventually, her parents broke the news: if she was so dead-set on studying magic, she may as well do it in the best place possible. Twilight was confused at first, but elated when her father revealed that they'd signed her up for Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. It was a dream come true--until she found out she'd have to pass an entrance exam.
All the studying Twilight had done seemed to vanish from her memory in that room. Try as she might, she simply couldn't get her magic to work; after a small fizzle from her horn, she collapsed, heartbroken. She apologized for wasting the reviewers' time and was about to leave, but at that moment, a colorful flash and a loud boom startled her--and set off her magic. A dozen different things seemed to happen all at once, not that Twilight could notice; she'd never done so much magic, let alone all at once, and the whole experience was overwhelming. Growing increasingly panicked at her own lack of control, it took the unicorn a few moments to realize somepony was there with her.
Princess Celestia herself.
Finally managing to regain control over her magic, Twilight prepared herself for the crushing shame of being scolded by the Princess. Instead, not only was she not punished, she was actually given the opportunity to be Celestia's special student and her cutie mark! From that day on, Twilight remained a diligent, eager student, growing closely attached to the Princess and constantly learning ever more about magic. But she never found it necessary to make friends, considering her studies far more important. By the time she was 18, Spike and the Princess were the only ones she was really close to--and they were almost more like family than friends.
Had she been left to her own devices, Twilight would gladly have kept on this way; after all, it was certainly easy enough to bury herself in her studies, not 'wasting time' on what she considered frivolous socialization. But when she discovered that the ancient threat Nightmare Moon might be returning to plunge Equestria into eternal night, she was dismissed and sent to Ponyville to check on preparations for that year's Summer Sun Celebration, and to do the very thing she found pointless: make some friends. Of course, when Nightmare Moon did return, it was only her new friendships the ponies she'd met in the small town--Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie--that allowed them to utilize the Elements of Harmony and save Equestria. Since then, Twilight has lived and studied in Ponyville, still a diligent student, but finally enjoying the magic of friendship as well.
Roleplay Sample:
It seemed pretty easy.
Too easy.
A little bit suspicious of this, Twilight turned back to the spell book, which rested on the library's center table. She'd read this paragraph about six times now, and the chances of her having missed something were very low. Practically microscopic, really, but she had to check. After all, what harm was there in losing a few seconds if you might learn something important? But the words yielded no extra information, no secret technique or ingredient the unicorn should note. So that was it, then; from here on out, Twilight was on her own.
Well, she did like a challenge.
"Alright, then," she said to nopony in particular (as nopony else was there), trotting a few paces over to where a small pile of dirt lay on a stool. It wasn't the first pile she'd gotten; earlier, she'd tried the spell on a sandier soil, only to have the end result fall apart the moment she tried to move it. It had been a bit bothersome, but after all, this was a new trick. Getting it right the first time was the exception, not the rule, and it would be illogical of her to think anything different.
Drawing to a halt a few feet away from the stool, Twilight began to go through her Mental Checklist for Trying a New Spell:
Glancing down, the unicorn spread her stance a bit, ensuring she was fully stable in the event that the spell backfired--an experience she'd had the displeasure of enduring before. Once she felt secure, Twilight once again thought aloud: "Check. Aaand, next up-try the spell."
Here was where things got interesting.
Lowering her head a bit to aim her horn at the pile of dirt, Twilight cleared her head, focusing only on the magic she was about to perform. She could feel the power gathering, causing a gradually brightening glow to emanate from her horn. As instructed by the book, though, the unicorn made sure not to release it; too soon, and the spell wouldn't work all the way. And with a trick like this, that was the last thing she wanted. After a good few seconds, Twilight felt her magic had charged up enough, and finally stopped holding it back; all at once, the power shot in a purple beam toward the dirt, which began to glow as it changed.
"Easy...almost there..." Twilight muttered, watching carefully as the soil drew together, growing lighter as it did. She was growing excited; it was working! Finally, she'd mastered Trick 36--
"Hey, Twilight!" Spike called, his greeting punctuated by a bang as the door hit the wall.
"Augh!" Twilight yelped, flinching at the unexpected noise. Her concentration broken, the beam of magic dissipated, dropping the small cookie that had formed in place of the dirt onto the stool. Frowning at her assistant, the unicorn said, "Spike, I was in the middle of a spell!"
"Sorry, Twilight," Spike answered apologetically. Sighing in response, she turned to examine the fruit of her labor. "Well...it's okay, I guess," she admitted. "After all, it looks like this turned out okay, anyways. Care to check Number 36 off the list for me?" Spike nodded eagerly, grabbing a quill to put a big X in the appropriate box on Twilight's list.
Smiling in satisfaction, Twilight used her telekinesis to lift the cookie to her mouth, speaking to Spike a she did so. "I'm going to try an amniomorphic spell, next. But I'll need clay. Think you can handle that, number-one assistant?" she chimed, before taking a bite. Chewing it cheerily for a moment, the unicorn suddenly froze, the line of her mouth crumpling in distaste. "Plegh!" Twilight spat out the mouthful of cookie, resisting the urge to wipe her tongue with a hoof. Lifting the rest of the small pastry to eye level, she gasped when she saw the center was still dirt.
"On second thought," she said, staring at the cookie's 'surprise' center, "Maaaaybe I'd better practice Number 36 a little more."
