Rainbow Dash was bored stiff today and it wasn't even noon yet. The young blue pegasus had already cleared all of Ponyville's clouds at least twenty times today, or so it seemed. "Ugh why won't these stupid clouds just stay away for one day?" she muttered as she bucked a small stray cirrus in frustration that happened to be passing by. A small frown began to cross her face. Now that that particular chore was done what else could she do? She didn't feel like napping for it was too early, plus she had only woken up about an hour ago or so.
Deciding to see if any other pony was busy, Rainbow Dash glided down to the ground to see if there was anything to do down here to keep her from going crazy. While standing in the town square for a few moments, she could see an occasional pony or two exit or enter a store as she walked down the street which pretty much signified that the businesses were open. Not exactly the shopping type, Rainbow continued onward hoping that something, whether it was fun or even dull, would happen.

Kale was glad that it was finally morning. He'd had trouble falling asleep the night before; what was worse, it took him at least an hour before he could even figure out why. He'd tossed and turned in his (still somewhat unfamiliar) bed, alternating between racking his brain for an explanation and trying not to think at all. Finally, though, it had hit him:
Ponyville was too quiet.
Most ponies would probably scoff at him for giving an explanation like that. After all, wasn't noise the sort of thing that was supposed to keep you awake? But Kale had grown up in Manehattan, where there was always something going on no matter what the time of night. The pegasus supposed he was so used to it, that suddenly not having it was just as disturbing as even louder noises might be.
But now it was morning, and while it was still quieter than his bustling home city, Ponyville was at least alive once more. Kale had the day off, but as he had yet to find anypony to spend that time off with, he occupied himself with perusing the marketplace. As usual, he had an eye out for any good ingredients, but his real goal was to find a gift to send his mother. Her birthday was coming up, and as his parents' birthdays were the only two parties he ever relented to appear at, he didn't want to show up empty-hooved.
Eventually, he came across a glassblower's stand, laden with all shapes and colors of glassware. He was considering a beautifully gilded mirror when something in its reflection caught his eye: a rainbow mane.
It was hard to forget something like that.
"Rainbow Dash?" he blurted, whirling to face the pony in question. Almost immediately, he regretted calling out her name; they'd literally only spoken for about a minute, he didn't really know her. But she was, aside from his aunt and uncle, the only pony he'd met in Ponyville, and that was enough for him. "It's...it's me, Kale," he continued, somewhat less brashly than at first. "You ran into me a couple weeks back." Literally.
[[Them meeting is in the thread 'Directions' in the archives, but I'm not kidding when I say their interaction lasted about a minute.]]

"Huh?" the pegasus was startled at the mention of somebody calling her name. Turning around she saw a pony. What was his name again? Kane or something? Thankfully he'd mentioned it so she wouldn't have to look awkward in front of anybody else. "Kale! Hey...um...how..how are you doing?" she asked as she scraped her hoof in the dirt. Man, she barely knew the guy and this was already getting weird. Maybe spending time with Kale might keep her from being bored after-all. "Hey Kale, are you busy?" she asked as her eyes darted from side to side casually to see if any of her friends were coming. Unfortunately, they weren't.
Why was this so hard for her? Meeting new ponies? Sure she was comfortable with her friends because well, she knew them. But Kale? Like he had mentioned, they literally only bumped into one another not too long ago.
ooc: I'll have to read up on that thread lol))

"Kale! Hey...um...how..how are you doing?"
Already, Kale could see this had been a mistake.
Rainbow Dash was obviously thrown off by his greeting. He could tell because she was acting the same we he often had when greeting somepony he didn't actually remember; no doubt she was currently racking her brain, trying to remember where she'd met him. Or if she'd met him. Smiling uncomfortably in an attempt to shield his embarrassment, the pegasus did his best to respond casually. Naturally, he barely managed that. "Uh, I'm...fine..." he faltered, silently cursing himself for not just staying quiet and sticking to his own business.
Realizing that the next thing that would come out of Rainbow Dash's mouth would probably be an excuse for her to leave, Kale decided he'd save her the trouble and give her the opportunity to do so nonchalantly. To that end, he turned back to the glassblower, pointing out the mirror he'd been eying earlier. He was reaching into his bag for the payment when Rainbow spoke up again.
"Hey Kale, are you busy?"
It took him a moment to realize just what she'd said; after all, he'd been sure to hear "Well, gotta dash," or something of that nature. He froze in surprise for a moment, the bits still clenched between his teeth, before remembering to drop them into the shopkeeper's jar. "Uhh...no, actually," he replied, his confusion painfully obvious on his face. After transferring his purchase from the stand to his satchel, he looked back up at Rainbow Dash. "Why...are you?"
Maybe this hadn't been as big a mistake as he'd thought.

"I um..." Great. Now she HAD to answer him back, but she couldn't think of anything at all to say! Scuffing her hoof in the dirt once more she replied, "It's..nothing."
She didn't exactly know what to do with herself now that there was awkward silence between the two ponies once more. Oh, how she wished some of her friends were here to help her out of this situation.
"Where IS everypony?" she thought as she looked around hoping that now her friends would show up to rescue her from socializing.
"I uh...I gotta go! There's a cloud up there that needs clearing! Catch ya later Kale!" With that Rainbow Dash sped up into the sky sighing as she flew. "Aw man...that was...I never wanna do anything like that again.." she mused as began to fly faster stopping high up in the sky before looking back down on Ponyville.
Perhaps she HAD been a tad rude to lie and just speed off, leaving Kale like that. "Ugh!" she groaned. She didn't know what to do with herself and all this awkwardness! Deciding to fly off all the odd emotions she was feeling, Rainbow Dash flew in a downward spiral as fast as she could, her eyes closed to relieve the tension in her body. BAM! Opening her eyes she saw a white pony underneath her and immediately stepped off. "Oops...sorry 'bout that Rarity."

Rarity stepped out from the grocery, a number of bags held up by a stream of magic flowing from her horn, and a light tune in her head. She closed her eyes for simply a moment and was crashed into.
"AAaah!" she yelped, food flying in every direction as she was pelted to the ground. She opened her eyes to get a good look at her attacker, "Why how DARE you! You-... Rainbow Dash?"
"Oops...sorry 'bout that Rarity." the filly stepped off of her, rightfully embarrassed.
Rarity, too, got to her hooves and started trying to recollect her items, "You really should pay more attention to what you are doing, Rainbow Dash. Why, look at this! Eggs! Broken! Not to mention all of this squashed lettuce... I might as well just make another trip." she sighed, still trying to get the ruined food at least off of the street. "Now then. What were you in such a rush about anyway? There's no need to constantly dash from place to place, you know. So there must have been a reason!" she glanced at her pensively, "Hmm?"
[[UHG. SO SHORT, I'M SORRY! I didn't know what else to do!]]

Why did there always have to be a reason for everything? Especially today of all days? "Hey I said I was sorry!" Rainbow snapped though in reality she really had no right to do so. She wasn't exactly in the best of moods after that awkward conversation with Kale, plus she also did feel a little bad for just up and leaving him in confusion like she did. "N-, well yeah there WAS a reason but..he's gone now." she replied as bent down and started to pick up the broken eggs and stomped lettuce. "I can't tell her the real reason I crashed into her was because of a guy. It'd be totally uncool!" she mused as she finished picking up the fallen produce. "Here you go Rarity." she smiled nervously as she held it out to the elegant pony in front of her.

"Hey I said I was sorry!" were the first words to escape Rainbow Dash's lips. And frankly, Rarity wasn't surprised. Still, she waited for an actual response.
"N-, well yeah there WAS a reason but..he's gone now." He...HE?!? did her ears deceive her, or was there a colt in Rainbow's life? Rarity could hardly keep focused on her floating groceries, and instead, stared eagerly in Rainbow's direction. But, before she could gather her thoughts, her companion broke through again, "Here you go Rarity."
With a little nod, Rarity gently allowed for those groceries to enter the stream of magic with the rest. But still yet, she was left unsatisfied. "Rainbow Dash, who is he?"
Nervous laughter, accident-prone, confusion, talking around the subject...why, it was all Rarity could do to stay standing. Rainbow Dash had never seemed quite like the dating type...but who was she kidding! Everypony was the dating type once they found their special somepony!!
"Rainbow Dash.." she began again, even sweeter this time, "Who is this he that you previously addressed?" There was a very coy smile placed upon her lips, but the innocence was lessened due to her humiliatingly awkward eye-twitch. It was no secret that she was moments from snapping.

Why is it that Rainbow always had just about the worst luck in these kinds of situations? Looking around first she made sure nopony else was around to hear what they were talking about since talking about colts really wasn't her kind of thing to do. "It was just some pony named Kale. The guy was totally awkward too." she replied as looked back at Rarity. "Why? Do ya know him or something?" Really, Rainbow Dash didn't see why Rarity wanted to press the issue of the matter with her, unless if she thought that they were going steady or something."And No I don't like him...if that's what you're thinking that is." she added as she began to unfurl her wings and hover in the air. Rainbow Dash was starting to become tense all over again from all this so called attention from talking with Kale.

"It was just some pony named Kale. The guy was totally awkward too." She paused for a moment- and Rarity's heartbeat increased. "Why? Do ya know him or something?"
Rarity's eyes shot open, her jaw dropped in horror, and all around her, the groceries came crashing to the ground, "NO RAINBOW DASH-NO! YOU CAN'T!" is what she wanted to scream out, but couldn't. How was she to handle this situation? Both of her friends with a crush on the same stallion! THE HORROR!
"And No I don't like him...if that's what you're thinking that is."
"OH THANK CELESTIA!" she let out, quite rudely. "I..I mean, what I meant to say was....good. That's very good. Because he has his eyes on somepony else..and that somepony..." Rainbow Dash began to hover above her, a distraught look on her face. Rarity frowned.
"Rainbow Dash come down here and speak to me on my level, please." She stated curtly. With a strict eye she questioned her, "Are you positive you don't have feelings for Kale? Because you certainly look the part..." She crossed her front hooves and pouted her lips, waiting for an honest response.
