The Basics
Name: Jasper Morgan
Nickname/Alias: Jasper, Jaz.
Species: Unicorn
Gender: Male
Age:Adult
Group: Good
Occupation: Expert miner and jeweler
Appearance
Fur/Mane/Tail: Jasper has rusty brick red fur that darkens sharply to black stockings at the knee. His black mane and tail are wavy and short, cut in a convenient style that allows him to both look respectable in his shop and yet, doesnt get ruined or in his way whenever he goes underground.
Clothes/Accessories: A pair of extra roomy saddlebags and a cart whenever he goes to the mines.
Cutie Mark: A single blue gem in a rough marquis cut. It symbolizes his trade as a jeweler.
Overview: Jasper moves quietly, not clumsily but not with any particular grace or dignity. He carries himself with purpose, as though he has something important to do and intends to get right to it. His eyes are a light sky blue, exactly the color of his cutie mark, and contrast sharply with his more sober fur and mane colors. These same eyes are highly expressive, becoming soft with affection, hard with anger, or bright with curiosity.
Personality
Personality Description: As might be expected of a pony who makes his living selling something as expensive and high-class as jewelry, Jasper tends to be soft-spoken and well mannered. His remarks, positive or negative, are usually couched in the most polite and gentlecoltly language. Though he has a good understanding of the rules of elite society, he has next to no interest in it, except as a means to make his living. Indeed, having to endure extended periods such society is once of the few things that can ruffle his patient and composed demeanor.Once ruffled, he is apt to become extremely sarcastic, while still keeping the outward appearance of manners. Though he prefers being straightforward and direct about his feelings in private, when manners prevent him from expressing himself, he resorts to cutting remarks- all the more painful for the appearance of good breeding about them. This is a self-defense mechanism, for in polite society, a sharp wit takes the place of rude language, and in the end, the sharpest wit generally wins.
When truly angry, which takes a great deal of work to rouse, he stays angry for days, brooding like a dark and ominous thundercloud. Eventually, the storm breaks and when it does, it's generally advisable to take cover for a while. Though he has never been violent to another creature, he's not above kicking, smashing, and throwing inanimate objects around. (but never at anyone.) Once it's finally all over, he's generally filled with remorse and apologies for letting his anger get the best of him. At heart, Jasper is a kindhearted gentlecolt and a secret romantic. Though he usually tries to hide considerate actions under a guise of 'merely something that happened to be convenient for him at the time,' the truth is that he often goes out of his way to look for nice things to do. His strong and silent facade is really mostly an act to hide a tender and rather fragile heart.
Strengths:
- Understanding the different natures of stone
- Slow to anger
- Artistic sense- at least as relates to metalworking and stone-cutting
- Unicorn magic, specializing in tunneling, stonecutting, and metalworking
- Extremely well mannered- when he wants to be
Weaknesses
- Understanding the different natures of ponies
- Difficult to calm once angry
- Lacks fashion sense- at least as doesn't relate to metalworking and stone-cutting.
- Inability to swim. He sinks like a... well, like a rock.
- Often sarcastic- often when he doesn't mean to be.
Fears:
- Deep water, rivers, oceans, boats, and anything to do with water over his head
- Becoming vulnerable to 'somepony special'
- Cave-ins, due to the nature of his work
Magical Specialty/Abilities: Jasper's unicorn magic is deeply tied into an almost instinctual understanding of rock and stone, How they are formed and how best to cut and shape them. Although he can't 'find' gemstones or metal ore with his horn like Rarity can, he can tap a deposit of a particular kind of rock with his horn and get an idea in his mind of how big the vein of stone or ore is and how best to get it out of the surrounding rock. He can also cut most kinds of stone with his horn directly, with the exception of the harder gemstones (such as diamonds) which he has to carefully break along their grain. (or more commonly in the case of a valuable gem, pry it out of the surrounding rock) This, he can also do with his horn. Interestingly, he cannot use his horn to cut his way through other materials, like wood, brick, or even refined metal. It only seems to work on raw stones. (he could never, for example, cut or break himself out of an iron cage.)
History
History:
Jasper was born the youngest of three sons to the Morgan family, unicorns of good breeding and a long family history. At a very early age he was instructed and drilled in the manners of elite society. His natural coltish impulses to run and kick and play happily were dampened, checked, and reined in. Where such raising made his eldest brother vain and proud, and his older brother weak-hearted and somewhat foolish, Jasper became quiet and sarcastic. Even as the youngest, he usually got the last word, because he simply wouldn't quit until he had it. But there was one unruly pastime his family simply could not rid him of. Jasper delighted in digging holes and collecting rocks. No matter how much trouble it got him into, no matter how much scolding and shaming he received for getting dirty, whenever he had a moment for himself, he was digging in the dirt like a dog burying a bone. One day while he was at it, head down and pawing at the ground furiously, his horn struck a rock, a very plain, ordinary looking rock. At once, it split in half like a melon, revealing a cache of rare, sky blue diamonds. Almost as immediately, the image of a blue gemstone appeared on his flank. That part, for him, was easy. What took some time was getting his family to accept that his talent would require him to work, and work hard, 'Toiling in the dirt like a common earth pony!'
In the end, his family was never very comfortable with his gift, even if it did have the potential to make them even more fabulously wealthy than they were already. So for their sake and his own, Jasper left his family behind, to seek his fortune in the wider world. He fell in with some miner ponies, and quickly worked his way up the ranks, thanks to his gift. He learned to understand the way kinds of stone were made, how to break it cleanly and effectively. At first, he was merely content to pull up raw stone, but one day when he was cleaning some of it up to sell it on, he began experimenting with breaking gemstones along their structures. He found he was quite good at getting the most out of a gemstone, so he left the mines for a while to learn how to cut, polish, and set gemstones into jewelry. This careful and exacting science felt like an art to him, and creating jewelry gave him self expression he had not known before. At last, with both ends of this trade under his belt, he looked for a place to set up shop for himself. And that was when he found Ponyville.
Roleplay Sample:(not necessary I know, but just for fun <3)
Jasper looked around the grand ballroom and sighed. His family had sent him this ticket to the Grand Galloping Gala, but now he was wondering if they had done it out of kindness... or spite. The whole purpose of the party seemed to be to stand around and radiate waves of self-satisfied smugness because you were invited. It was boring, his suit was itching him, the food was fancy, but completely unsatisfied, and the musicians had been playing the same six classical songs in the same order for the last three hours. Wasnt there anything interesting going on?
Actually, now that he noticed it, there was. His attention was caught by a cheerful pink pony bouncing around trying to have a good time- or, failing that, trying to get others to have a good time in spite of themselves. She took a flying leap off the stage but slammed into a cart with the only good-looking food in the place on it... sending the apple cake flying into the air. Jasper watched in stunned amazement as it sailed through the air and landed on probably the best-dressed couple at the ball. Or, to be more precise, on a lovely unicorn mare whom promptly turned on her companion in a fit of unladylike rage. He recoiled sharply and backed into a priceless celestia statue, which swayed alarmingly and then toppled!
It would have certainly shattered into peices if a pegasus mare hadnt zoomed in out of nowhere and caught it upon her back! Jasper had hardly time to be surprised at this interesting turn of events before yet another disaster began. The mare was trying to right the statue when she accidentally nudged one of the pillars of the ballroom. Then (and really, who designed this room full of unstable and heavy objects?) this pillar toppled into another, and another, falling like a row of dominoes. When the dust cleared, he was relieved to see that the mare was unharmed. Which could not be said for the statue she had tried to save. It seemed like the crisis was over at any rate, until unexpectedly, the double doors to the garden flew open and a swarm of animals flooded in! They were followed by another pegasus mare screaming at the top of her lungs! At that, it became a screaming, stampeding bedlam with animals chasing ponies, ponies chasing animals, food flying, clothes being ruined, and everypony flinging themselves from one end of the ballroom to the other! Going home that night, his suit utterly ruined, a black eye and a splitting headache, Jasper could only grin at his recollection of the event. That was a party he would certainly remember to the end of his days!
